Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to contest specific calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
